Our 6:30pm Ash Wednesday Service of Worship marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is a season of 40 days, not counting Sundays that ends the day before Easter (Holy Saturday). The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter as we confront our own mortality and confess our sin before God within the community of faith. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship. During the service, worshippers will be invited to participate in the Imposition of Ashes, (marking the forehead with the sign of the cross using ashes made from the burning of palm leaves). This ancient practice can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation.
