PUMC COVID19 Update #2

Dear PUMC Family & Friends:

The PUMC Church Council, Pastor and Staff take the health and well-being of our congregation and community very seriously. We are continuously praying that you are all staying healthy and observing the guidelines from CDC officials during the COVID-19 health crisis.
While we wish to maintain a steadfast focus on our church mission to Worship in Love, Grow in Love and Serve in Love, we are following official guidelines of the CDC and Bishop Holston. In the midst of this unfortunate and unfolding issue, we have made the made the following decisions:

  • For at least the remainder of the month, Sunday Worship Services, Sunday School Classes and Youth Activities will not be held in the church building. We will continue worship activities as a community of faith online via the PUMC Website and PUMC Facebook Page. We will post an update on the timing and status of these services on both of these sites by Noon, Saturday, March 21st
  • All PUMC events scheduled for March are suspended or will move to an online format until further notice. (ex: Choir Rehearsals, UMW & UMM Meetings, trainings, etc.)
  • All other scheduled events by organizations/individuals using the PUMC campus are either cancelled or postponed.
    • The Wedding Shower for Marcus Sizemore scheduled for Sunday is cancelled. Guests who were planning to attend may call Linda Honeycutt at 803-548-6239.
  • PUMC Staff will work remotely on our new online ministries. The office voicemail will be monitored periodically, but the best way to contact staff is by direct email (see below) or via their cell phone numbers.
  • Our church building is temporarily closed and individuals with keys are asked not to enter or use building as Trustees will be turning off various systems in the building to conserve energy costs.

As the situation continues to evolve, your Church Council will work with Pastor Becky and the staff to make decisions regarding future services and building use. We will continue to connect volunteers and congregants through email, the church website, Facebook and Instagram to keep you updated.

We know that fear is seeking to overcome many in our nation. Fear plays and important role in our lives – it helps us avoid or prepare for danger. But, fear is meant to move us to action, and beyond that, we believe, to faith. A few years ago, The Rev. Adam Hamilton shared the following acronym of “Fear” that can help us all to live unafraid:
Face your fears with a bias of hope (choose to believe things will get better)
Examine your fears in light of the facts (get facts from credible sources)
Attack your anxieties with action (think of what you can do, not what you can’t do)
Release your cares to God

This is the strategy King David used as he wrote Psalm 56:3-4: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I am not afraid.”

With the confidence that we are all the beloved children of God, we look forward to continually engaging with you in opportunities to Worship in Love, Grow in Love and Serve in Love.

Sincerely,
Becky Shirley. Pastor
