Philly Youth Group

At Philadelphia United Methodist Church, our Philly Youth Group, known as PYG is a ministry by, with and for 6th through 12th graders. A major part of PYG is our desire to make every youth feel welcomed and encourage them to grow in their knowledge and love of God.

Whether playing 9 Square or GaGa Ball on the church grounds, swimming at the lake or gathering in a classroom with mentors and a small group of peers to study the scriptures and pray, PYG offers middle and high school youth a safe and fun environment where they can explore their faith relationships with Jesus Christ, their peers and adult mentors.

Foundational Beliefs of all PYG Ministries

Every Teen Matters:

Every teen is created and loved by God. We want teens to not only know who God is, but to know who they are because of God’s love for them. Nothing they do (or don’t do) can change that truth.

What Happens at Home Matters:

God has designed the home to be the primary place where faith, love, and values are lived out and modeled for teens. We want to empower parents and grandparents to help their teens grow in their faith and establish their own faith identity as they grow into adulthood.

Every Family Matters:

We believe that every family is a part of a bigger story that God is telling. And every family has the potential to reflect God’s love to the world. At PUMC, we want all families to feel that they belong.

What Happens Around Family Matters:

Raising healthy teens requires a community of people who care about them and surround their family with love and support. We work to create mentoring connections between teens and caring adults, while cultivating a community of friendship and support for parents and families.

Our Mission: To Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World by helping youth and their families worship in love, grow in love and serve in love.

As youth learn what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and learn to make Disciples for the transformation of the world, we offer them guidance and support through the following opportunities to Worship, Grow and Serve.

Worship

We provide opportunities for youth to experience and participate in worship with the larger church body in ways that empower them to hear and share the Good News of Jesus Christ with each other, as well as those in our community, nation, and world through words and actions. Opportunities to participate and lead in worship include:

  • participation in our Youth Band – Illuminate
  • serving as lay readers, ushers, on our audio/video team and
  • planning and leading our annual Youth Sunday Services of Worship and Praise

Grow

Our dedicated staff and volunteer leaders provide our youth with multiple opportunities for spiritual growth, in safe learning environments, where Biblical Truths and life application of those truths are explored in ways that encourage youth to live as faithful disciples and meet life’s challenges. Opportunities for growth in faith include:

  • Annual weekend Spiritual Life Retreat
  • Weekly Sunday Evening Program of Food, Fellowship and Biblical Life Application Studies
  • Girls Life Group – Small group mentoring program
  • Boys Life Group – Small group mentoring program
  • Active Bible Study
  • Disciple Bible Study
  • Confirmation Classes for Students in the 8th grade or older

Serve

Believing that an important part of being a disciple of Jesus Christ is showing our love for our neighbor by serving with whatever gifts we each possess, our youth are actively engaged in reaching out to offer their time and talent in ways that minister to the needs of those who are hurting, or have lost their way; to those who may not know Christ; and to those who are weary, worn, and weak. Throughout the school year Saturdays of Service opportunities are offered where youth engage in community service at local agencies including:

  • 2nd Harvest Food Bank,
  • Samaritan’s Feet
  • Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child
  • Assisting homebound church members with yard work
  • Summer mission trip
  • Salkehatchie Summer Service
